INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS

Souzan Hawala-Druy, MPH, BSN, was a faculty at Howard University-College of Nursing, currently, part-time faculty at College of Medicine, USA. She is a presenter, keynote speaker, and guest lecturer at national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops for topics related to culture competence’s curriculum development and enhancement; inter–professional education; and Millennials as health professionals. She developed and teaches: 1) Interdisciplinary Culture Competency course for health sciences students, 2) Culture Competency for Master of Clinical & Translational Research, and 3) Interdisciplinary Health Ethics. Also, peer reviewer for international nursing and medical journals. Co-authored a book chapter, 2011, Culture Competency and Sensitivity in Human Simulation, in Human Simulation for Health Professions; co-authored a journal article, 2012, Interdisciplinary: Cultural Competency and Culturally Congruent Education for Millennials in Health Profession; and authored a book chapter, 2014, Cultural Competency for Radiologic & Imaging Nursing, in Core Curriculum for Radiologic and Imaging Nursing.

Stuart graduated as a nurse in Sheffield in the 1980s and then pursued a clinical career in emergency care and subsequently as a nurse practitioner in homeless outreach in Central London. He completed a Masters degree through Manchester University with a dissertation on care of homeless people in A & E departments. His career, influenced by a passion for learning, then led him into to education when he took the opportunity to become a lecturer and then programme leader for the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) BSc (Hons) Nurse Practitioner programme in the then Institute for Advanced Nursing Studies.

Ehsan Khan has completed his PhD in Physiology from King’s College London and has been a Registered Nurse. He is currently working as Lecturer in King’s College London. He is Academic Lead for development and utilization of online learning in the faculty and is involved in research and teaching of biosciences in nursing. He has published more than 30 papers and a number of book chapters primarily related to physiology and pharmacology in nursing.

Dr. Rona Faye Levin is currently a consultant in healthcare education both for academic and clinical agencies. She was formerly the director of the DNP Program at New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing. She is also a consultant in accreditation of nursing programs. She has over 100 publications and has presented nationally and internationally on teaching evidence-based practice (EBP), EBP improvement projects, and developing academic/clinical partnerships. Most recently, the second edition of her book (co-edited by Dr. Harriet Feldman), Teaching Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing, published by Springer, won an American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Award. The first edition of that book also won an AJN Book of the Year Award. In 2008 she received the Jesse M. Scott Award for exemplary integration of research, education and practice from the American Nurses’ Association.

Mirjam Norris-Nommensen works as a Nurse Practitioner Hospitalist in White Plains Hospital, an affiliate of the Montefiore Health System. She is currently enrolled in the DNP program at Pace University, New York. Mirjam does research in Nursing Science.

Professor Peter Draper is professor of nursing education and scholarship development at the University of Hull, in the North East of England. Peter has been a registered nurse since 1980, and obtained his PhD in 1994. His research interests include the nursing contribution to the wellbeing of older people, creative writing in the nursing curriculum, and nurses’ use of language with older people. Peter is recognised in the UK as a National Teaching Fellow, and he is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Peter is a widely experienced nurse educator and has supervised many students for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees.

Susie Schofield started work life programming then project managing in the financial sector in London. This led to an interest in training and education, and she completed a PGCE at Cambridge University in 1991. Moving to Dundee in 1999, she studied for a masters in applied computing, which she combined with a 3-year research assistant post on a European-funded eLearning project. This was followed by a PhD in the School of Education at Dundee: The medically interrupted learner: Communication channels for sustaining educational and socio-emotional progress where she analysed the experiences and attitudes of health and education students and professionals as well as hospitalized children and their guardians.

She joined the Centre for Medical Education (CME) in 2006 as Staff Development Officer, supporting NHS doctors involved in the undergraduate medical curriculum in their educational role. Appointed lecturer and eLearning academic lead in 2009 on the Masters in Medical Education programme, she led the move of the paper-based course to online. In 2013 she became senior lecturer and CME’s internationalisation lead, and works with students and staff both locally and internationally. She is a member of senate and the University subcommittees for Equality and Diversity, the PGCAPHE and the Consumer Protection Act. She represents the University on the SHED (Scottish Higher Education Developers) group and continues to work closely with NES (NHS Education Scotland) Tayside.

Roger Watson is a graduate of The University of Edinburgh with a PhD in biochemistry from The University of Sheffield who qualified in nursing at St George’s Hospital, London. Working in care of older people, he has a special interest in the feeding and nutritional problems of older people with dementia. He is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Advanced Nursing and Editor of Nursing Open. A frequent visitor to the Far East, South East Asia and Australia, he has honorary and visiting positions in China, Hong Kong, and Australia. He is Professor of Nursing, University of Hull, UK and was a member of the UK 2014 Research Excellence Framework sub-panel for Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy. In 2017 he was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.

Professor Dr. Nurhan Bayraktar graduated from Hacettepe University School of Nursing in 1986. She completed her master’s degree in Surgical Nursing at Hacettepe University in 1988 and her doctorate in 1994. She worked as an assistant professor at Hacettepe University Faculty of Nursing between 1995-2000, associate professor between 2000-2005 and professor between 2005-2014. She has been working at the Near East University since 2016

Dr Carol Reid has many years of clinical nursing, tertiary education and research experience. She has made significant research contributions to the areas regarding self-management of chronic diseases such as, Cancer care, Alcohol and Drug, Hepatitis C, Sexual Health, HIV/AIDS and Renal nursing. She has successfully received competitive grants and is currently leading the development of a digital psychometric measure to test patient-reported experience of cancer care. This health services research will support patient centred care and will assist in informing the strategic direction of cancer services and organisations within Australia’s health care system and internationally with New Zealand Collaborators.
